Dr. Lee Wei Ling, a renowned neurologist and the daughter of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 69.
As the former director of Singapore’s National Neuroscience Institute, Dr. Lee played a key role in advancing neurological care in the country.
Dr. Lee was also known for her outspoken views, often speaking openly about issues concerning her family and Singapore's political landscape.
Born in 1955, she was the second of three children of Lee Kuan Yew and Kwa Geok Choo. Her academic achievements led her to pursue a career in medicine, where she specialized in neurology.
Her dedication to her field and patients earned her the respect of colleagues, peers, and Singaporeans at large.
Though she lived in the shadow of her father’s monumental political legacy, Dr. Lee chose a different path, focusing on public health rather than politics.
She was admired for her professionalism and strong sense of personal ethics. Dr. Lee Wei Ling's career was not without challenges, and in recent years, she struggled with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare and debilitating neurological disease that eventually claimed her life.
This condition causes problems with movement, balance, and eye movements, gradually leading to more severe impairments.
Dr. Lee was not only recognized for her contributions to medicine but also for her candid reflections on family and society.
In her later years, she became a vocal critic of certain political and familial matters, particularly regarding her family's legacy and governance in Singapore.
Her passing has deeply saddened the medical community and the nation, as she leaves behind a lasting legacy both in her field and within Singaporean society.
